Mercy commands mercy
As humans we have the tendency to reciprocate, at least to some extent, the way we are treated. When somebody is aggressive towards us we get defensive or fight back. When somebody do us a favor we are open to give a favor back if needed, some of us even feel a favor is owed in return.
As we show mercy towards those around us, our family, friends, and people in our community, the chances of receiving mercy back increase. That is a blessing.
The Oxford Dictionary defines it as compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.
Human relations aren't always symmetrical. Anyone whose love has not been reciprocated comprehends this very well.
This is evident in our legal systems. We are not going to be given a free pass merely because we didn't press charges when an offense was done to us in the past.
Fortunately for us, God is just and does return to us the mercy we show to others.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.—Matthew 5:7
